'We've got you covered'

Co-scientific director of Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) North America and MIT economist Amy Finkelstein and Stanford health economist Liran Einav's publication, 'We've got you covered,' proposes a radical US healthcare reform. In the book, published 25 July 2023 by Penguin Random House, the economists argue that the American health care system was never deliberately designed, but instead pieced together over time as various issues became politically relevant. Despite the cost and size of the country's health care system, 30 million Americans still lack formal insurance.

'We've got you covered' considers that rather than continuing to expand the US insurance system with ad hoc legislation, it should be entirely dismantled and rebuilt, sensibly and methodically. Original research, insights fro American history, and a comparative analysis of healthcare systems around the world support the authors' proposal for automatic, basic and free universal coverage with the option to purchase supplemental coverage.
