Building from what is beneath our feet

Synopsis

This event looks at the role of architectural practices in climate change adaptation, exploring in particular how sustainable, vernacular methods of building design and construction can help tackle heat stress, the spread of infectious disease, water insecurity and other challenges aggravated by climate change.

Convened at COP27 by Community Jameel, C40 and Foster and Partners, and hosted at Goals House at the Four Seasons hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh, this event features a spotlight discussion highlighting contemporary uses of sustainable, traditional construction practices in Egypt and globally, and a roundtable conversation bringing together architects, policymakers, donors, researchers and cultural practitioners.

'Building from what is beneath our feet' is a quotation ascribed to the architect Hassan Fathy (born 1900 in Alexandria, Egypt; died 1989 in Cairo, Egypt).
