As Egypt's financial inclusion initiative, 'Decent Life,' prepares for its second phase, Gamil Helmy, assistant Minister of Planning and Economic Development, discusses the programme's impact to date, and acknowledges the critical nature of the evaluations conducted by the Egypt Impact Lab, a partnership between Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) MENA and the ministry, in generating data to track the progress of economic development in rural Egypt.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development held a coordination meeting with the Central Bank of Egypt to discuss the executive steps for implementing the financial inclusion strategy in the second phase within the national project to develop the Egyptian countryside, “A Decent Life.”

The meeting was attended by Dr. Jamil Helmy, Assistant Minister of Planning for Sustainable Development Plan Follow-up Affairs and General Supervisor of the “Decent Life” Project in the Ministry, and from the Central Bank, Khaled Bassiouni, Director General of the Financial Inclusion Department, Rami Jalal, Deputy Director General of the Financial Inclusion Department, and Sally Abdel Qader, Director General of the Financial Inclusion Department.

During the meeting, Helmy reviewed the executive position for implementing the financial inclusion strategy in the villages of the first phase of the “Decent Life” project, noting that it resulted in covering all local units with automated teller machines (ATMs), installing 1,208 machines, as well as establishing and developing 127 bank branches by the end of September, 2023, and providing a variety of financial and banking services, including electronic wallets, internet banking, prepaid cards, and quick response codes, which contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens and increasing financial inclusion rates in villages, praising the ongoing cooperation and coordination with the Financial Inclusion Department of the Central Bank on this matter.
