Specially commissioned to mark the COP28 conference in Dubai, this limited edition piece is a collaboration between Shahd Essam and Community Jameel.
Inspired by the intricate geometry of traditional wooden screens or mashrabiyas – from an Arabic word literally meaning ‘place of drinking’ – this coaster evokes an original function of the mashrabiya, which was used for cooling drinking water.
Shahd Essam is graduate of the Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo, a programme delivered by The King’s Foundation in collaboration with Community Jameel and the Cultural Development Fund in Egypt.
