Batiking for a living

2015 alumna of the Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo, Samar Hassanain, tells the online magazine, Majalla, about her batik craft and her small business selling batik-dyed fashion and home decor products in Fustat, Cairo.

Hassanain established her business after graduating from the Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo, with a strong desire to design fashion dyed using the batik technique in way that reflects Egyptian identity and links back to the craft's Egyptian roots.

“Few people have any idea that batik is an ancient Egyptian art. Ancient Egypt knew batik through Abyssinia," she says.
