Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (J-IDEA) at Imperial College London

The Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (J-IDEA) at Imperial College London was cofounded by Community Jameel and Imperial College in October 2019.  With the mission of combating the threat of disease worldwide, J-IDEA uses its expertise in data analytics, modelling and epidemiology to understand the causes of the diseases and health crises affecting populations around the world, and to find workable solutions to address these.  This includes:

Responding to health emergencies

Working with national and international policy makers, technical partners and tightly integrated into global alert and response networks, J-IDEA develops analytical tools to respond to the complex health needs of populations in emergency situations resulting from infectious disease outbreaks, population displacements, climate change, natural disasters or conflict.

Strengthening health systems

Global investments in research and development are delivering a plethora of new health interventions (drugs, vaccines, diagnostics, health system innovations), but health budgets are constrained. Furthermore, the impact of investments into health systems are often not as easily measured as investments into more narrowly delineated disease interventions. J-IDEA applies analytics to generate the evidence to allow policy-makers and funders to target intervention investments for optimal impact, with a particular focus on evaluating health system benefit packages rather than single vertical interventions.

Building partnerships and capacity

J-IDEA works to enhance partnerships and build capacity in epidemiology and analytics both globally and locally. It will enhance and extend partnerships with major global actors, and partnerships with governments and NGOs. Using the latest pedagogic approaches (online, blended and face-to-face method), J-IDEA aims to contribute to technical capability development where it is needed– in the most affected countries and regions.

With a collaborative spirit, J-IDEA seeks to partner with governments, institutions and communities across the world to shape the future of global health policy to deliver better lives for all.
